A partner emailed you, recognizing your hard work and thanking you (you billed aweful lot of hours this month). Do you respond or not?

Yes. WTF. Just be a normal person.

likefunny

Umm, you must be new here, because that’s asking a lot!

likefunny

Say thanks and keep it short.

like

Definitely respond:

‘Thanks. Please make sure next month is lighter.’

likefunny

I usually say something like "Thanks! Happy I can help."

like

Don’t say happy to help if you weren’t happy to help

Thanks very much! Really appreciate you reaching out!

like

Yes. This here.

I can tell you’re overworked by the fact that you’re even asking this question. Get some sleep and when you wake up you’ll realize the answer was always yes.

like

Yep, always. Takes 30 seconds and helps you stand out when it's bonus time.

like

Definitely respond

like

How many hours does it take to get this

like

I wish the partners in my group would do this.

like

Say thanks and you better remember me come bonus time in December

like

“Happy to help and thank you for all of the help and guidance along the way, I definitely learned a lot”

like

I don’t always reply to these lol.

like

Yes. Thank you for the encouragement and appreciation of my work.

How is this a question? How could you not respond?

Have you been fired before even starting your new job?

I signed for a new job two months ago and will start next month (3 mo notice period in Europe). They were very keen on getting me on-board ASAP before signing but since I signed the contract it has been silent from the new employee. I've emailed them with questions as I'll be re-locating to NL and it takes them 1-2 weeks to reply. Given all that's going on in the world, I'm worried they might fire me before I even start.

For those who have gone from one big 4 to another…was it frowned upon by your superiors/looked at as a slap in the face, even if your intentions are to leave on good terms?

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

Anticipating her wants and needs and then adjusting my behavior to meet them. Which she appreciates but it’s frustrating 29M 27F
