I used to enjoy socializing for business at various industry events. But I stopped doing that during the pandemic and never really picked it up again. I'm always skeptical of things that are billed as networking events, as I don't think you can really create networking mechanically. It's just a matter of meeting people, establishing some kind of connection or rapport, and staying in touch. It just has to happen organically or it probably will be an empty experience.
I really enjoy online events, so I’m always checking LinkedIn for ones about industry trends and what’s working for others. I also try to go to local events when I can, so I stay active in a few Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp groups with people in my field. Even just commenting on someone’s LinkedIn post can be a great first step if you’re not sure where to start.
I'm part of the local marketing meetup group in my city. We meet once or twice a month. It's pretty casual and most of us are 40 and under. I only recently started going, but it's been pretty fun!
I’m a member of a few private clubs & start up communities so I tend to network primarily through those nowadays. Then the occasional industry specific events here and there when they make sense.
I tend to think look at working as “Show and Tell”, it’s an opportunity to talk about cool new things you and other people are working on. More often than not you can find commonalities and new opportunities.
Nope
I think sample until you find your tribe. And keep trying new stuff since crowds change. I like a mix of in person local events, online communities (slack, discord + webinars) and some bigger conferences. I’ve been to SXSW, TechCrunch Disrupt, Startup Grind Conference, OpenWorld, Dreamforce and AWS Re:Invent multiple times. I prefer the vendor agnostic events unless I’m actively working in that specific marketing stack.
What are you looking to get out of your networking? Happy to recommend some options. I forgot to add reaching out to former co-workers, clients or partners is a great low-effort start.
