It’s normal for a Company “panel” to have some sort of a show-and-tell experience, and there’s an unfortunate reason behind: more and more, people are self-assigning medals on their resume, which could compromise the operation if these are just on paper. With that said, it should be an experience in which the Company uses old data for an outcome already known. But, lots of small companies are scouting for new ideas in the form of recruitment, and will have you on interviews with several people, all bombarding you with questions to try to extract the “secret sauce”. A Company that knows what they are looking, will have: a comprehensive and well established job description; an interview sharing their needs at the same time that they confirm your skills; a well known onboarding package (which is usually shared if there’s real interest) and very well prepared interviews, with key questions and on the clock. You can ask for consulting compensation if the hiring Co. is asking you for actual work as part of their screening process, before moving a finger of course.
If they ghost you after the interview, write on glass doors on the interview process and give them zero stars. It'll let others know what the company is like.
Ask for compensation.
I was just interviewing and the job market has flipped. Every single job I interviewed for and made it to the panel interview was a case study. It’s awful but it does seem to be what companies are trending toward. (I had one schedule my panel and then after I’d done all the work, let me know the position was on hold…)
How long were you given to complete the task? If it is a week, I’d go back and explain this would be a shorter strategy, with not too much research behind it. When I was hiring, despite needing an expert, I was conscious of the fact my interviewee would be working whilst completing the assessment and made sure to state this is a draft/brief proposal they need to create, not a fully decked out quarterly strategy. I stated it clear that this is to test their basic research and strategic skills, and it’s okay if some assumptions made are wrong.
Wow, I don’t envy any of you for the hiring processes you guys go through. Mine are pretty basic 30min conversations but I’m probably pretty basic. 😆
I had 2 interviews that was exactly the same as what you’re describing so i think it is common now.
This is what happens most of the time. Same happened to me as well. A few companies ghosted me after the test submission.
I feel like they took my ideas and ghosted me.
Is there a way to deny their request & go with another type of presentation instead? Or request a compensation for your ideas. Just like Nicola Tesla, they took his ideas for no compensation or profits. I wouldn't give out my ideas. There should be a law for this! Lol
