How many pure prosecution hours would you say is comparable to pure patent litigation hours? Does 1850 pros to 2000 lit seem right? Pros bowl estimated as low as 1600 pros to 2000 lit but would like this Bowles thoughts.

Ya, I guess there’s the factor of cutting your own time… and then the factor of the work just being more mentally draining. Patent pros doesn’t belong in biglaw imo. Patent lit is way easier (or other fields)

Who is offering up the numbers? Unless they’ve worked both sides I wouldn’t put any stock in it. I’ve never worked pros myself so I have no idea.

1600 to 2000 sounds right to me. But it depends on how much the firm charges for office actions and non-provisionals. I’ve seen big firms charge between $4k and $6k for OAs and between $10k and $20k for NPs. Higher the price, the less associates have to write off their own hours…

I work with the lower end of budgets but I'm pretty efficient. My firm is really great about asking us to enter all time actually worked and not getting mad if we are over but even then I know I still subconsciously round down/underestimate if my timer isn't on or something. And I'm exhausted after spending 4-6 hours on a tough office action which means I might take a longer break before starting the next task. Patent pros is a grind even at the nicest of firms.

I've done both. As far as comparable stress, I'd say 1750 to 2000, maybe, but I did pros for a firm that was willing to charge a little more. I noticed in pros a 200 hour month was absolute hell, but in lit, it's just busy.

I have billed a couple of 175 months and was pretty exhausted, but probably could have fit in a bit more if necessary. 200 sounds like where my breaking point would be. Meanwhile during a similar month my friend at Cravath doing litigation (not patents) had billed 240. I was like...how the heck???

Recently hired an admissions consultant and based off of our consultation she was great. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a ton of non-gmat club/PQ feedback on her but I went with my gut and moved forward. What is the best way to get the most out of my experience with her? I am starting from the ground up for R1.

Worked with an agent on my first deal, great. Second deal now and I’m getting my license myself. I’d like to use her as a backboard for ideas and don’t mind giving her a “finders fee” or something but would like to capture the commissions myself. What would be the normal way to have this convo?

Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. Plus outlook does weird things sometimes like combines conversations so I only see most recent sent item in that convo. Alternatively, do you have a good way confirming you caught all of your email time?

Hi, I’m currently a Clinical Site Manager for 3 separate regions making a 34k salary. I’m finishing my MHM in August and I’ve been working in an ambulatory healthcare setting since I graduated college in 2018. I’m looking for a position that pays more. Billables as a mid-level IP litigation associate at Big Law, AM100, and AM200 firms? I’m currently doing 60% patent prosecution, 40% litigation at a mid-sized IP boutique and am considering lateraling for a patent litigation position, but I’m concerned about work life balance, especially since my SO and I are expecting. I currently have a 1900 target, and I routinely bill about 2000. I’m interviewing at DLA, Saul Ewing, Honigman, and Fox Rothschild (all DC offices).

I have been practicing as a patent prosecutor for 10yrs and I really have grown to dislike drafting. I've always had an interest in litigation but never seem to have opportunities at the firms I've been at to gain experience. Has anyone successfully taken a job as a patent litigator without prior experience?
