Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. Plus outlook does weird things sometimes like combines conversations so I only see most recent sent item in that convo. Alternatively, do you have a good way confirming you caught all of your email time?

I bill my emails on a weekly basis by doing a general search of my outlook inbox for each day. I think it should work the same for sent items. But you have to search “received:YYYY/MM/DD” and it only gives you the results for that date. I move my sent items to the case folder in my inbox so it returns my sent items as a result. But if it doesn’t, you should be able to use a similar search in your sent folder.

I use my email to make sure that I’m not missing anything. I have noticed that my Carpe Diem timers would stop when my computer would freeze and I wasn’t capturing all of my time. First turned off the feature/changed my view of that combines the conversation. Second I created a search folder with all of my mail and I narrow it by the month or week (depending on the time period I’m checking my time) then i scroll through or search for emails. This also helps me gather the emails to save it to a sub folder. I delete any emails I don’t need too.

Also- to answer your question. I don’t see anything in my Outlook program that would let you export a list of emails. You can print a table view but it might be tough to see all of the data.

If you use iManage, and save emails to it regularly, you can search for your email in the “From” field, then narrow by time period. You can export that list.

Lol I asked my MP this same question and I got the “you should bill as you go” talk again

Hah, same here A1.

Not sure this solves the problem (my favorite part of being in-house is not having to track my time!) but I find exporting emails to pdf a great solution to many problems, and you can opt to “append to pdf” and continue to add emails to an existing file at any time. It keeps each emails as a distinct PDF within the portfolio, and if you have your emails filed into folders it will maintain your filing structure. Maybe that list of emails in the pdf portfolio would help?

You need to set up a folder for each case/matter/project. It will be easier.

That sounds like a great problem to have! I see you're not really getting other responses. I also think you're barking up the wrong tree here-- ask your IT professional for ways to navigate outlook. If you don't have that resource, there should be plenty of outside IT/desktop support firms that can help you figure this out.

Alternatively, bill as you go. Even if you don't use your billing software on a daily basis, you can keep a legal pad with daily entries, e.g.: "email to X at school district Y; .5"...that takes two second to write, you won't even notice it.

I work with an attorney who uses that legal pad method and takes about half a business day at the end of each month to input. Sort of a happy median between doing it now and doing it later.
