How many times do you find yourself reprompting your LLMs to do what you want it to do? I had a task today to write up some sql and GPT 4 was NOT getting it at all. Super frustrating.

Why are you using GPT 4 in 2026?

like

That’s fair I must be behind the times

It depends on how culturally-compatible the task. LMMs are trained to be like average, ordinary folk. For example, if you need payroll functionality, but your company has emerged from darkness and recognizes that $/hr is unethical, and therefore only uses buying-power/hr as a salary model, good luck trying to get an LLM to remember that salaries must have datetime and location properties. LLMs are perhaps the ultimate example of "think inside the box".

“Culturally compatible“. That’s hilarious.

I tried Copilot in SSMS and lasted about a day before I disconnected it and kicked it out because it was functionally useless. I will write my SQL by hand thank you very much. Including capitalizing all the things.

I hear Claude works a lot better generally

Yeah, it is not perfect, but sometimes it works. It has written some good Postgres scripts for me

Sometimes, hit or miss for sure

Provide the schemas and the goal, usually works fine.

That’s what I did, I could be using an outdated model and not promoting in the context where the database code is

Which languages do you use at your job as a software engineer?

Does anyone have any advice for a junior C++ engineer. Or do companies generally don't hire a specific language. You just have to take on whatever code work is available. Are you specifically hired for a particular tech in your company? Or most of the time you just end up not doing it at all?

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

I am a contract employee that was just brought on a month ago. I have done well with onboarding and learning their tech. I have now been asked to design an architecture for an upcoming project, and document it all. Nothing at this company has been well documented before. I have a feeling they just planning to use my previous experience and then let me go since my pay is high. Is there a way I can safeguard against this?

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?

Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?
