Most recruiters skip them, honestly. But when they’re required, I use it to hit one major success story and show I read the job post. Have you crafted a “base” letter you tweak per role? However, some places do like and read them, so depends a lot.

yes i have a base letter! I've heard from many companies that they don't even want to read one anymore. I wonder why this shift has happened!
I personally don't care, but the other manager here weighs them heavily. She'll actually skip over an applicant without a cover letter. I've never worked somewhere where your cover letter could make or break your chances, but I guess that's the beauty of working for different companies.

oh wow! thanks for the insight :)
I only really put any value in them when we get an application where the person is changing careers and they have no relevant experience. It gives me some insight into their thought process around applying for the job when it seems like they might've applied by accident otherwise.

thank you!
We read cover letters when they come in. Can it make or break a candidate's chances? Maybe. They aren’t required where I’m at, but sometimes it can help if they have a job gap or something that could use a full explanation.

good to know!
