Rising 5th year. The partner I closely work with gave me a positive evaluation and wants to chat soon about my future. I’m planning to apply for in-house positions after the New Year. Ideally, I’d like to be open with the partner about this and leverage their connections with clients. But I worry about admitting I don’t want to stay and try to make partner. They basically control all my work. How do I hedge in this chat that I’m leaning in-house over staying long term at the firm?

Long post alert. I'm unable to focus at work.
