I’ve got about 20 years cross channel experience in marketing, split between big brands and startups, and I’m considering pivoting into a data science/data analyst role. I know it will initially be a step back in comp but is it at all realistic for a person with certificate level experience in data analysis but a decent marketing management background to expect $150-200k comp or is that mostly for degreed candidates (or not realistic at all)? Any guidance here is greatly appreciated.

Are you aiming for an IC role in data? Or manager?

For IC roles, it might be hard to convince someone you’re not overqualified (meaning they might think you’ll hate the job and leave in a few months) with so much experience. The IC data science market is brutal also, with so much competition for jobs from every smart Ivy League kid.

Have you considered manager roles on the Business Intelligence side? I personally don’t know of anyone moving from marketing into more technical data science (model building, experimentation, Python pipelines). But may be possible.

I think more than a certification, the experience will be better. The salary you are looking for is excellent and achievable due to your years of experience.

Hi! I’ve been trying to jump industries- preferably to tech (but open to other industries). I have about five years of experience in revenue strategies in the aviation industry and it’s been a difficult journey.

Essentially, I’d like to be in strategy/ops or strategic partnerships as I believe my previous experience translates the best to those roles.

I have submitted over 100 apps (about 10-15 with referrals to Google, Meta, Amazon, and a few more) but have not gotten much traction.

Are there companies that will hire by seeing that I am willing to learn and am interested in frontend even tho I don’t have much experience with it yet?

I don’t want to leave team members in a bind at the end of the Q. Conversely, this is a business decision and they wouldn’t hesitate to let me go if they saw fit.

Hi there,
I’m a bit newer to data science and recently read through a few academic case studies on ethical fairness in ML/modeling. Would love to start a thread to hear some more from data scientist/ML perspective.
The most harmful example I came across was bias in ML for the criminal justice system.

Is anyone currently in a data science/ML position willing to share their thoughts/maybe an example based on experience? Thinking about how to actively prevent this kind of bias in future models
