I have recently been promoted to VP, quite early in my career. At one side, my boss says I have been assigned the least important work in the team leaving me underconfident about my value addition. On the other side my boss's boss expects me to collaborate with other VPs and share my opinions. Being an introvert I find it difficult to be a part of group discussions. Overall promotion has put me under a lot of stress and anxiety. The need to prove myself all the time is really overwhelming.
Congrats on your promotion!
Perhaps your boss’ delivery is… not so great (with the comments about “least important work”)… but he/she wanted you in this position so don’t doubt or stress that you deserve it. 😊 As a new VP, he/she probably meant you are starting with a workload that will help you learn rather than burn you out or burn bridges with business partners.
When you’re feeling less confident, perhaps reflect back on some of the feedback your boss has shared previously on your strengths that earned you this promotion.
Consider spending time getting to know your peer VPs in 1x1 settings. Learn what they’re working on, what their pain points are, and a little about them personally. This may help you feel more comfortable and confident to speak up in group settings.
