I accepted an offer to move in-house and my start date is next week. I just found out that I am pregnant a few days ago so I asked HR at the new company for a copy of their maternity policy. They called me and said they don’t have an official company policy and they “cobble something together” between FMLA and the company STD policy. This really surprised me since I’ve never heard of a company not having an official policy and I’m now rethinking my decision. Continued in the comments….

Yes, you’re right to view this as a red flag but frankly, I’m surprised you hadn’t already looked at this if there was a possibility you’d be expecting. Your other issue is going to be eligibility for paid leave, as many places will have a one year waiting period. Also, generally speaking, larger law firms have more generous maternity leave policies than most companies.

The pregnancy was unplanned but you’re absolutely correct.

This is not unusual, especially for companies that are smaller or have been around a long time. It's what I was offered when I had my kids in 2007 & 2008.

I'd look into the STD more to see whether you're going to qualify. That's based on an insurance policy and the company might not be able to override it if you're not eligible.

This is a red flag to me but I’ve only ever worked at large companies. Is this a smaller or startup? I can’t imagine not having an actual policy but maybe it’ll work to your benefit in not having a minimum requirement to qualify for it. I’d get it in writing that you’ll get the time off at a certain amount of pay if you can, even though you’re starting now. Might not be great/binding but could help you?

Yikes. That’s 100% a red flag… how do you not have a policy that applies to all employees? So you can just change it subjectively depending on the person? Idk I just think of the worse.
Do they have other “official” policies? PTO/vacation, sick time, bereavement, etc? I would look into those as well and see if it’s a pattern. Otherwise try to negotiate parental leave as a set policy even though you already accepted.

After some digging I found out that the STD will only cover 60% pay for 12 weeks. Am I right to seriously question joining this company or is this typical? I am currently not working so I don’t have the option of returning to a previous employer but I do have another pending job offer that I could consider.

60% pay for 12 weeks isn't awful. My company's std is 2 weeks with no pay, then 4 weeks or 6 weeks at 100% pay (vaginal vs section) and then 4 weeks of parental leave (offered to mothers and fathers)

I would get them to give you something in writing and negotiate your eligibility. But also check out your other option. What state are you in?
