It sounds like the friend is practical and sensible. Also medical school is extremely expensive here. Maybe she still has loans.
SA1 - Oh that maybe the reason. She does have some loans I think, has come up in some conversations
Feels common to me. I make $300k and bought all my "new" furniture from people on Craigslist and FB marketplace. My friends are mostly the same way. But we all also still have lots of school debt.
I have better uses for my money than paying retail for certain things.

Our HHI is close to $600k and we use coupons at the grocery store when applicable (we don't go out of the way to coupon, just use them when they're readily accessible), have a fair amount of artwork from Goodwill, and my wife does a lot of her clothes shopping at TJ Maxx.
Nothing at all wrong with living way below your means!

I am this way. It’s just how I was raised and I enjoy bargain hunting.

Bargain shopping forever. As long as it’s good quality, I’m ok with some good thrift finds every once in a while. No need to spend more when you can get something nice for less.

you married well. you don’t need therapy at this point.

OP, it’s pretty common, but probably depends where you live. special certainly given her wage bracket
Are you sure on the salary? That sounds high for 5 years of practice especially if you mean 5 years since med school. Plus the cost of med school is outrageous. Average med school loans are above 200k
I mean tons of people thrift there are literally thrift chains (Buffalo exchange, Plato’s closet, uptown cheapskate) also apps like thredup and Poshmark. But if she has med school loans that’s even more of a reason to do it.
