My wife and I started couples therapy a month ago. So far it’s good, but you both have to WANT to put in the work to get better. The therapist can only do so much. So if there’s that glimmer of hope still left then do it. I’ve been married 10 years and I regret not starting therapy sooner.

In my experience it just delayed the inevitable but I think that’s because I basically forced my ex to try couples therapy. I think couples therapy can only be beneficial if both parties are willing to participate wholeheartedly. Also, I would ask what are you and your partner trying to achieve by going to therapy? If your end goals do not align then in my opinion it’ll be a lost cause.

I used to be a triage counsellor for suicidal people, but we had people accessing the service for all kinds of problems, including relationships. I’m an advocate of pre-emotive therapy, where you invest time in working on your thought patterns and communication techniques BEFORE things deteriorate.
