I try to consider whether the tip is expected and therefore is built into the employee's pay or not. For example, for baristas, servers, bartenders, they are paid less hourly because they're expected to be tipped. The same is so for cab drivers. I tip 20% + for anything with table service; 15-18% for takeout that involves service (e.g., a latte); 10% for takeout that just requires packaging. I usually tip 15% for cab rides, or round up to the nearest $5, whichever is better. I tip tattoo artists about 10%, and I'll adjust the tip I give for gig economy delivery based on how bad the weather is!
Man I don’t get you guys tipping for takeout. You’re telling me that you go up and you tip the guy at the counter 15-18% for ringing you up? Dude preparing the food is included in the price. Makes literally 0 sense to tip on that.
Same with a cafe. Tipping while standing at the counter because someone is ringing me up sounds insane.
I have tipping on a scale for occupations where wage structures have a tip expectation built in: servers, barbers, and cab drivers.
I use 15% as a benchmark, 18% for exceptional service, 10% for subpar service.
The highest was a 33% tip after a celebratory dinner where our server was attentive and where we were likely her sole table for the evening.
The lowest is not $0, although I do not tip for handing me a packaged item. (I don't tip the supermarket cashier either.)
If I am recommended a round figure for a small purchase, I tip that. I can't tip only a percentage of a $3 coffee without it being a meaningless amount.
I tip an absolute dollar amount for hotel service. I tip $5 per day per guest, although my number may be outdated.
I round up to the next dollar in all cases, but that's a personal quirk.
Yes.
Unfortunately, we are in a system where the tip is a necessary part of income in tipped positions.
10% flat!
I basically don’t tip unless I’m getting table service. Otherwise I may as well tip at the gas station or grocery store. What am I tipping for if I’m standing at the counter? The price of the goods is the price of the goods. We exchange and the deal is done. There’s no tip for that.
If you do something extra for me, then sure.
