Following, because this is something I really want to do. I dream of staying in the French alps for a month or two.
I would just frame it as a mini-sabbatical. Let them know you will use your PTO and unpaid time off as needed. I did this for a month with my husband in Southeast Asia but my work just let me work remote.

I’d be really surprised if my company said no in all honesty, we are a really relaxed company and my boss has been working in Bali for a few months now, and other employees have been working remote whilst on UK based holidays (I’m UK based). Usually when I use my annual leave I only go away for a few days at a time, or maximum of a week. So the remainder of the days I have, it would be about 10, would just be long weekends off which wouldn’t be covered. I’d just play catch up when I get back!
That sounds like a dream vacation, I hope you're able to pull it off! From the other comment, it sounds like you have at least two weeks of paid leave that you could use for this, which gets you halfway there. If they're unwilling to give you two additional weeks of unpaid, could you possibly work a modified remote schedule for the other two? You obviously don't want to spend all your time sitting on your laptop while you're overseas, but it might help increase the likelihood of them giving you the greenlight.

I love this idea! Definitely curious if there’s an option to work part time remote
I would just be open and honest with them and let them know its something you are considering and see if they would be able to accommodate that. If they really want to keep you they will do it. My company did it for me because they didn’t want to lose me.
