I am not a fan of Barbie in terms of body image but the doll is great in the fact that it was basically the first doll that told little girls that they can do more in life than just be a mother and wife.
I'm not sure Barbie would be a role model for women but it allows young girls to roleplay in all sorts of professions with or without a man (I never had a Ken) as something other than Just Mom. I never really thought about just how groundbreaking it was as the first doll that wasn't a baby - girls could play something other than caregiver which given the mid century timeframe was pretty life changing.

I actually love the work Barbie has done to change and become something to look up to; I think they waited too long to do it, but I'm glad they actually did instead of keeping their head in the sand about what we need to teach children about what actual humans look like. If you're interested in learning about what they've done to modernize Barbie, I would strongly recommend watching Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie on Hulu.
For me, no because of the body image issues that it continues to promote even with recent changes. I don’t think a doll should be considered a role model. That doesn’t make sense.
If I had president barbie when growing up, my world would have been rocked. I think for the younger generation it’s more meaningful than for folks who have been already exposed and damaged by the body image issues.
It's a doll. How can it be a role model for any woman?
Exactly. Get 'real' people.
No, too many body imagine issues
