Think they did a good job on this piece. It was a truly embarrassing moment for the firm, but I think it’s being handled as well as can be expected. Should go smoothly this year 🤞

I get shit talked because I have a high utilization rate. People shit talk those with low rates. Gossip about what time people come in and when they leave. Doesn’t feel like there’s any genuine friendships in the office. 4 times a year we let our hair down and get shitfaced drunk and then go back to work the next day and do our best to ignore each other again. Disappointed
I started in a small office (at a big 4) and felt very similar to your post. Just had a very cliquey vibe complete with a group of ‘cool kids’ who kind of ran everything from a social perspective (and to an extent for professional opportunities in the office). I moved as a senior to a much larger office at the same firm and found a completely different environment where I truly felt a sense of community (in line with the family metaphor you were sold). I’ve now been at the firm many years, but I am positive I wouldn’t have made it very long if I stayed at the first office.
Not sure I really have any advice for you other than to say that culture can not only differ wildly from company to company but also office to office, service line to service line, etc.
Can I join your team?
Mine is opposite. Everyone hangs out at each other’s apartments after work but I’m not social and like time alone so I can’t vibe with the rest of the team. I just keep my head down and get my work done. They chit-chat the whole day about random things I know nothing about.
That is totally me 2.
I feel this way. I get in, get my work done, and get out. I honestly feel like my coworkers waste so much time chit chatting and taking 2 hour lunch breaks only to stay later in the day
I hate it when they say “we’re a family.” PwC was just pushing that the other day in a US-wide broadcast. I like my coworkers, in fact I think they’re great, but they’re not family, not even close. If you need your office to fill in for your family you’ve got problems.
Managers often say that and I feel like bs. I also hear we are lucky to work late to avoid traffic 🤣😂
In an industry where most people end up leaving, you can’t rely on “friends” always being there at work.
Big yup. Depends on the office too, but that pretty much sums my office. Mostly due to one of my managers being such a huge drama queen. The trickle down effect of her negative personality is real.
Are you in Austin?! 😂😏
I can relate OP, I got sold on the whole “we all get along, we are like family” speech only to come find out how clickish everyone else is and how the opportunities are given to those who are in the inner circle. It sucks, very disappointing. Grass is not always greener on the other side.
The associates in my office are really social. Some even took time off together and went on a road trip. Senior associates and above don’t have time to socialize that much though.
Work friends are not real friends, to be honest. I don’t work at Deloitte anymore, but I can attest to workplace gossip for me happening more often at the regional firm I’m currently at than at Deloitte.
I can relate - regional firms tend to gossip more ..maybe because there’s less headcount
So you made an emotional decision. Not a wise move buddy
Depends on the office. But even at small offices where I’ve enjoyed great friendships... I wouldn’t call it family unless you’ve got a dysfunctional one. 🙄
