I got a newly promoted boss. When I ask him about my next step in career progression he told me he truely doesn’t know what he has control over regarding promotions. I’m trying to look at this an opportunity, even though my instincts are screaming red flag. How can I manage up to keep my career moving?

I mean benefit of doubt is that the boss is new and has no idea how things work. Maybe connect again in a few weeks/month to see if there’s any update. I think there’s a difference between someone that doesn’t care and someone that just needs time to figure it out

Yeah. I think his intentions are good. So I’m optimistic that he’s just not familiar with process.

Honest answer: it's both. A new boss who admits he doesn't know his own authority is a red flag and an opportunity — the window is open to help shape expectations before someone else does.
Go above him strategically. Build visibility with his manager or cross-functional leaders who do have promotion influence. Document your impact and make sure the right people see it.
And set a 90-day check-in with your boss specifically on this — if he still can't answer, you have your answer.
Are you actively building relationships outside your immediate team?

Question about remote job negotiations

I'm currently interviewing for a remote role for a company based in NY.

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?

Anyone have experience with this?
