How do you incorporate warm up/bell ringer problems so that kids actually complete the problems and not just use that time to socialize?

I have riddles every day for bell ringers. It’s not the math we’re learning, but I have nearly 100% participation. It gets them thinking, they learn riddle patterns and syllogistic logic (which is part of math) and the struggling students can start math class with a moment of success when they figure it out. It also helps my ESL students really nail down some of the finer points of English. Anyway, there’s a bit of extra credit for anyone who gets the answer before it’s announced, and my students are actually paying attention to the very first part of class. They may tune out afterwards, but I at least had them for a second. 😉

Go to a high school, where the kids have a goal and must pass classes. I left my junior high after any years and I am so happy to be at the high school! Yes, grade them!

Really clear expectations on how to complete them and then Bam... stickers!

I have a log for each unit and check them as a quiz grade on tests days. They get a stamp for the day so I know they didn’t copy it down later.

I started doing my favorite no. They get a small piece of paper and they know they only have a few minutes to complete it before I collect it. I take attendance and get up to collect. Once they realized I was taking their paper whether they were done or not they started doing it really quickly. Their names are on the paper. I sort them in my hand as I collect them based on if they were working and then correct answers from incorrect and then when I go up to the front I quickly look through the wrong ones to find the common errors. If you look up my favorite no you can see how the teacher in the video does it.

I put off doing it for years because it looked like more work then it actually is. I now love it. I can usually find the common errors while collecting it, takes me seconds to find the example or examples I want to use, then I use my document camera and write out the problems with errors and the students discuss then class discusses what went wrong, why we make that error, etc. I have completely gotten rid of social hour and every student minus tardy students almost always gets it done.

smart

Make them required assignments and grade them. That's the only way I can get my kids to do them.

Stickers! It won't work for everyone everyday, but it's weirdly motivating for a bunch of students. I'd walk around about 5 minutes in after I had taken attendance and put a sticker on the papers that had evidence of effort. Sometimes I'd do a 2nd lap around the room as well to see who else had joined in. If they're very grade-driven, you could have them save them and turn them in at the of the quarter for bonus points or something

The socialization may indicate a need to transition rather than jump straight into work after the work from the previous period. Structure the socialization with prompts from refresh.khanacademy or Students can share one celebration and one current challenge with a partner, or I like the riddles idea or brain teasers, or just let the kids socialize while you handle your start of class business and allow yourself some time to transition as well. The content will come…we don’t necessarily have to hit the ground running right away. 16 years in the teaching game and a teacher mentor/coach…to alleviate some pressure and frustration; it’s not that serious. I’ve found having everyone start off from a place of calm connection and transition helps the lessons go smoother and we get more. Sometimes that brief 5 minute break is warranted. Let us know what you try and how it goes!

Just found out that my favorite aunt, who claimed I was her “favorite” niece, chose to leave all her valuables to her other two nieces who never visited or called her once in the last ten years. My aunt passed away suffering from cancer last year and didn’t have her own kids. I was there by her side throughout her battle. I still wish I had done more, made her life easier. I probably sound petty, but a part of me is forcing me to re-evaluate every interaction I ever had with her.

Lawyer Couples:
I’m currently an associate (no kids) in a very busy corp group (think 50-60 billable weekly). My wife works significantly less (currently part time, 10-15, but hopefully will be full time soon). I find myself getting upset when asked to help with basic household things (trash, cooking etc.) when she’s been lounging around watching Netflix all day. Am I being reasonable or am I a misogynist? How do you deal with one person having significantly more free time than the other?

My husband does not show affection openly and is quite lazy in bed, and I thought I could deal with it because I love him, but it’s really really beginning to annoy me. For example, he refuses to do any foreplay and basically asks that I get on top of him most of the time when we have have sex- if I push him to do anything else he basically just refuses to have sex at all as some sort of ‘protest’. I am finding myself fantasising about an affair more and more

They don’t hear the arguments after bed time and don’t understand the bruises yet but I know it’s just a matter of time. At my uncles wedding in Madrid I remember lying down on the grass in the courtyard after their first dance and crying, my Dad came and saw me, laid down in his suit beside me and asked what was wrong.

“I know my boyfriend wouldn’t dance with me like that at our wedding”

And we just lay there as I cried, and then got up. Had a drink.

Said boyfriend left years ago, and now I have a wonderful man who just asked me what type of dance lessons I want for our wedding next year.

Don’t give up.

I hope he’s in as much pain as I am. The way he ended it was so cold and selfish and unlike how he was any other time with me. It was like a personality switch. I’ve never been so wrong about someone. I’m not sure how to process or recover from that part of it.

Why do we always tell people “Be the best version of yourself before starting a relationship?”
I feel this is wrong…first, if you’re someone who constantly wants to be better, this doesn’t work. Also, what happens when you’re going through things and you’re not the best version? What happens is…the going gets tough and then one person leaves the other.

During the pandemic I dove into my self care (found a therapist, learned I was having seizures and got on meds for that). My journey has been difficult and not pretty to watch. Somewhere along the line I feel like my fiancé saw too much. I no longer feel like romantic parters and instead feel like we have a “caretaker/patient” type relationship. I don’t feel sexy or attractive anymore. I talked to him about this and he feels bad. But I feel guilty for bringing it up. Anyone else had this issue?
