You're right, of course, if the salary wasn't treated like a mystery people wouldn't feel the need to question it. It seems reckless to reject people who inquire about salary, though I can understand that some people may ask in a way that comes off as unprofessional. The subject itself is entirely legitimate, but it it's someone's first concern it may look odd.
Treating salary like some big taboo secret just breeds suspicion and wastes everyone's time. If companies were upfront about ranges in postings or early chats (which a ton more are doing now thanks to all those new transparency laws rolling out in 2026), people wouldn't feel like they're prying just to get basic info. It's reckless to auto reject someone for asking, especially when 40%+ of job seekers skip postings without pay listed because it feels shady or disrespectful.
Honestly, that is really interesting to hear. I would think they would look at it from the standpoint of it will save them time if the salary doesn't align with the goals of the person applying. Nothing worse than going through interviews only to get an offer that is way below what you could accept.
Totally agree; it's such a waste of everyone's time when you invest hours (or days) into interviews, prep, talking yourself up, only to get hit with an offer that's laughably low and nowhere near what you'd need or expected. I've been there, and it feels like getting catfished by the whole process. From the company's side, yeah, you'd think they'd see it as a huge efficiency win: weed out mismatches early instead of dragging things out.
