I had to terminate an employee at the beginning of January. I spent 2 months coaching before involving HR. I thought I knew them, and they would turn a corner. An additional 4 months of HR write ups, and finally termination. They started not long after they started contacting staff on LinkedIn for recommendations. They have continued to contact staff on Facebook messenger. I’m guessing to try and get job which isn’t possible. Is this a common occurrence?

100% this is normal for LinkedIn. Facebook is not so common, but depends on culture and industry. Lots of people connect on Instagram also

Instead of looking down on them, respect the hustle of them job searching. Everyone is 1 paycheck away from this exact situation. We work so we can live.

It's weird and pretty low that your staff is reporting this ex employee to you. But yeah most employers will want some recommendation from a candidate's previous job. Just because things didn't work out the way you expected doesn't mean everyone in your office would speak negatively of this individual. Really pretty grossed out that they're reporting this to you, if they don't want to provide a recommendation they should just say so.

Also what are you hoping to gain from asking this? You're kind of coming off as smug that the person you fired (your coaching probably wasn't all that great) hasn't found a job.

I think this is a bit unfair. She doesn’t come across as smug. She’s just stating facts isn’t she? You’ve also made a really strangely personal remark, which makes me question your own diplomacy skills..!

Why isn't it possible for them to get a job? Yes, it's normal for people to seek recommendations.

OP the only issue is if this goes against the agreement of a settlement agreement or legal/ contractual obligation with HR. It’s perhaps a little bit immature that the employee is doing this but it’s also not unheard of. Sounds like they are panicking. Unless it’s disrupting a contractual obligation, I would quietly let it go. Your colleagues can decline the reference if they want to.

Am I missing something with Quickbooks? I’ve been hearing a lot of firms use it so I signed up to try it but it’s quite confusing with the trust accounting. Looks like I need the advanced version but that’s like $180 a month. We already do billing through Tabs3. Would I be better off investing in an all in one practice management + accounting + billing software? Any recs?
