It's often true more for the age, not so much the disability.
I teach mild LD in high school. We have been remote since September. I do a lot of virtual hand holding, but, to be honest, it’s no different than when we were in person. I’ve been doing this for years. In some ways, I prefer remote because I can individualize more than in class. We don’t have the distractions of teachers/admin walking in, peers who joke around, etc. I feel we are more focused. I’ve achieved so much with my kids.
Yes. I teach students with mild, moderate, and severe intellectual disabilities. My data collection shows it takes 3-6 weeks of consistent instruction to make them independent. If you teach them how to go through a type of assignment everyday and keep a consist assignment type or 3, then they should pick it up by half way through quarter.
You can also make recorded videos that they can play as they go through assignments.
I felt this way for years. So many have so much learned helplessness. I try very hard to foster independence and initiative in them.
Sorry forgot to add we are fully remote.
I work with younger students but, yes. It is so difficult to measure if they really need the help or they have gotten into the habit of waiting me out
