I have a chatty bunch of 28 kids. I’m at a loss at how to get them to stop talking. They do not talk when I’m teaching, but as soon as we transition, like even just if I start handing out worksheets, they immediately start talking. They’re not loud for the most part but they are all talking so it’s very distracting, I’m starting to think I’m going to have to literally make them practice being quiet by timing them and rewarding those who can do this most basic thing 😖

Try having the students help with an orderly transition by appointing a weekly leader to monitor the group line, pass out papers, be sure everyone is on correct workbook page, etc. Students will work to help their FRIEND AND/OR CLASSMATE. I had 5th and 6th graders monitor lines as we transferred to the RR, cafeteria, gym, computer lab, etc. Be sure to keep a visual list so they know whose turn it is and ensure that ALL have a turn. I also let them be the monitor for the entire week.

These are great ideas! Thank you!

I feel like it's not normal or natural for kids to be silent all day. Maybe while you're doing simple tasks like handing out papers that could be a good 2-minute mind break where they are allowed to talk and/or stand and stretch. I think most adults need this, too. Do they have times built in to the day for this?

If they’re silent when you teach, sing their praises! We should all be so lucky! If it takes two minutes to hand out papers, let them talk and have a signal to bring back their attention: a hand sign, a bell, an air horn, whatever. I guess I don’t see much wrong with letting them have “chat breaks” if they’re respectful whenever you ask them to listen. Heck, I have a small class now that I’d be ecstatic if I could get each of them to say a sentence every day!
