I have a very basic question regarding networking on LinkedIn. Is it appropriate to reach out to 3rd level connections to try to get a foot in the door with companies you’re interested in? I’ve reached out to 2nd level connections with the permission of the mutual acquaintance, but so far, I’ve been too timid to just reach out cold.

I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much?
