I have always been a super approachable and understanding boss for my employees, and I go above and beyond to continue being that way. I run a small company so it makes things easier. However, in recent times, I've noticed a bunch of my employees taking a lot more leaves and I'm starting to feel like I'm being taken advantage of. How do you all draw the line?

I guess my question would start with what are the leaves? Are they in the PTO? Or are they FMLA leaves? I have folks at work right now that leave to pickup their kid from school, however they make it up later in the day.

Are you tracking the work that needs to be done in a way that you can measure it? Even with vacations, and short absences like doctor appointments - the work still should be getting done.

Also, do you have a process for the leaves to be taken? For example, vacations need to have 1 week advanced notice at least? Ideally doctor appointments should be a week in advanced unless certain circumstances (aka kid came home from daycare ill)

Before making a decision, go back through the data. You might find that out of the group it is really one or two people. Or just a cluster of unhappy events all at once.

Hi!
I would start by looking at the facts:
- what does “a lot more leaves” exactly mean? How many more and comparing to what? Also, what kind of leaves, sick leaves, vacations...?
- what (if any) impact do those leaves have on their commitment, their performance, their results, your relationships?
- how would the ideal situation look like for you?

Based on these answers, I would then think what (if anything) do I want to do about it:
do I want to have chats with my Team to inquire more about those leaves?
Do I want to schedule generic feedback sessions to discuss their satisfaction and potential suggestions? (which is something that should be done regularly anyway)
Do I want to come up with a clear/er policies when it comes to taking leaves?...

Wish you all the best! :)

If you’d like to share more & chat further, feel free to message me/connect on LI. Happy to help.

Good morning. I am currently a senior associate in BugLaw, and I have applied to several trial attorney jobs in Chicago offices of federal agencies since the start of the pandemic. According to usajobs.gov, my applications to the DOJ and CFTC were “referred,” and my application to the SEC was received and my GS scale verified. But I haven’t received any updates on these applications in over a month. Does anyone here have any insights on these or on federal hiring generally? Thanks!
