What’s the best thing for a new associate to do to get on billable work? I was mapped to an industry I have no experience in; how do I start gaining experience when I don’t have the experience to get on these projects?
I'm finishing my first year as an associate in Minneapolis and am considering a move to Boston (originally from the East Coast). Can anyone in the area give some insight into general billable requirements, salaries, and quality of life as a young associate? Or just your experiences as Boston/NE attorneys. Thanks!
My firm sent an email yesterday saying their tracking billable hours DAILY. It’s either they don’t think we’re working from home or about to have some layoffs 🤷🏼♀️
Real talk: does anyone else find all the bragging about super high billable hours kind of sad? There is more to life and it just reads like life not being lived. 😔
Partner: I've been sitting on a request all week. You need to stop billable work and put together this deck today. And be quick about it. Cool? I thought so.
I’m back to having no billable work again. My department almost completely dried up when covid started, so I’ve been relying on work from other busy departments at my firm to keep me busy since March. I feel like I start a new job every couple of weeks and am constantly begging for work. I’m just exhausted. Can anyone else relate?
Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.
KPMG Advisory (Tech/Salesforce). What's the WLB? Avg billable hours vs actual hour worked?
Have any of the independent contractors in this bowl ever had a kick-back clause in their contracts - meaning, have you had to pay a rebate/kick-back based off of your previous year's billable time?
I’ll be short of RSM’s billable hours goal of 1600 by around 300 hours by the end of fiscal year end. How fucked am I?
First year here at midsize. What to do if I ask for work but none is given. the past few days I’ve had 1-3 billable hours too. Apparently it’s slow for some ppl. There was also some lay offs as well.. Wonder if I should also start looking at jobs now just in case.
What does your work schedule look like (roughly) if you are aiming for 1900 billable hours?
What are expected utilisation rates for entry level consultants? Been here 9 months and only done billable work for about 3 months of that. Bored out of my mind for the majority of my time here.
For those in FDD, TAS or even investment banking, is your performance still based on billable hours?
Has anyone noticed that busy season is changing into a marathon, not a sprint? I’m working close to 60 billable hours/week year round, and 70+ Feb - April. Is this a bigger trend?
I’ll be doing my first deposition ever via Zoom in a month or two. Any tips? Resources to read? Videos to watch? (I’m a rising second year associate who got hired during the pandemic. I really want to impress my new bosses, so I’m going to put in tons of non-billable time prepping)
Tax work at my law firm is not enough to keep me busy. Maybe I could start doing work in another department to supplement my billable hours. Is anyone here a part timer in another group? I’m thinking investment funds or start ups? Anyone else do this and any advice?
To those of you who have high billable requirements and are single, how do you manage your time? Especially those with pets.
When your boss gives you 48 hours (clock hours not billable hours) to produce a viable objection to a MTD/compel arbitration in a complex commercial lit case, which is not my practice area, what kind of result is he expecting? From scratch, no template.
What happens if you don’t hit your billable hours? I am a first-year that had a very slow February and slow start to March. I’ve been reaching out to various teams for work but things seem slow now & I’m worried that I’m not going to hit my 1800 target.
Looking to take some PTO in Quebec City. Restaurant, bnb, activity recommendations? Thanks!
Just started my first post-college job, based in nyc: assuming the office doesn’t open for the next 12+ months, should I continue wfh at my parents house in the middle of nowhere and save $30k over the course of the year (but basically throw away a year of my social life), or move to nyc in a few months w some roommate friends? How’s the city looking nowadays?
Can we talk about the failure that is vision 2020? I dunno about yalls office , but here in the south. We've had employees laid off , list multiple clients , and are now trying to pass stuff to India
My wife and I just had our first child and as she was waiting to be vaccinated (we went for her first shot on the way home from the hospital), we told both sets of parents to wait 3 weeks before flying to come see us. Understand that’s upsetting but her parents couldn’t handle it to the point that they stopped talking to her for three weeks half way through the pregnancy and then after saying they understood, flew to her sisters place (2 hrs from us) without telling us then called after..cont’d
If it's not requested in the job announcement and it's not required to complete the form, do you have to submit your transcript when applying to MBB?
lady 🐠, where can I find some work appropriate dresses? The struggle is real this morning...
How long did you wait between interview rounds? I had my first R1 interview in may, and found out around Memorial Day that I was moving on to the next round. Since that day, I’ve followed up a few times (1x every 2-3 weeks) but it’s been radio silent. The Hiring Manager who I have spoken to said I’m still on their candidate list. I know the process at Google takes awhile, but wondering if I should continue to follow up/if this is an indication. It’s for a Pgm role in GCP
How to ask a startup to share their books with you. Being courted for Manager of S&O role, but don't want to be walking into a sinking ship.
Anybody here that knows about the work culture at Nokia in the Noida office or in general?
I need help with my daily makeup routine/application. I'm looking for a natural smoky look a la Olivia Pope/Kerry Washington. Any recommended tutorials to help me re-learn how to apply? Prefer someone who gets to the point, talks about technique and keeps it simple. Bonus points if there's someone who helps you identify the best looks for your eye shape. Does this unicorn exist?
Have an offer from BCG platinion, they've been super vague about what the role is. was curious if there's any fish that could help shed some light on the group.
How does someone get good at case interview? Been watching so many interviews but feel like I'm just getting more confused?
My Covid antibody test was negative but I swear I had Covid before.....I don’t understand this virus
Anyone have insight into salary at Charles River Associates? Associate level, thanks in advance!

Manager: “Hey can you stay on tonight to get these samples to the client so they can work on getting us the support over the weekend? Thx”. Bro, the client logged off 2 hours ago and won’t be back on til Monday at 10am. Why you gotta ruin my Friday?
Hi, where or what types of companies should sophomores & juniors apply for next summer (2022) to recruit for IB the following summer (2023)? This summer BBs wrapped up SA IB recruitment, EBs even earlier, and a fair amount of my friends missed out big time. Also, if a sophomore or junior doesn’t get a finance-related summer internship (I.e tech) and aims for an IB SA or FT position, is it harder to break in? Appreciate any advice and insight, thank you.
