The first thing I suggest is that you thoroughly read and understand the non-compete clause that you most likely signed during on boarding. This type of activity is what actually gets prosecuted.
The 'soft skills' can crush your objectives. Soft Skills such as networking with people, standing on principle, and being a true 'trusted' advisor are part of the success journey. What can hold you back comes to 'politics'. You are looking to take clients away from your 'current' employer and either take them on as an independent or steer them to another startup. If potential partners (direct and indirect) here about this, they may give you the cold shoulder not knowing if you would do the same to them with their customer base.
Start your business plan and objectives, network like it is no tomorrow with others, emphasize your 'value proposition' and move forward. Also, read the other comments from others regarding 'Non Compete' clauses that are standard in many contracts.
Yes, I plan to tread carefully. I might even self invoke the “cool off” period.
Definitely not looking to burn any bridges.
You want to take clients away from your employer, and "not burn any bridges"?
