Someone once told me. Consultants are high performing, high intelligence, highly insecure people. If you are not constantly questioning yourself or introspecting, you’re doing it wrong. The most successful consultants are the ones who constantly pare down their second guesses and know when putting in more is diminishing returns.
But real talk. I think what you’re feeling is normal. But I will say this. If you’re in the 2-3 year promotion cycle then you’ve been promoted because you have been doing what’s expected of you in your current role for the past year. Treat the first few months as a coming to grips, ask smart questions, find mentors who are one step ahead of you in tenure and ask how they managed it.
Confidence comes when you just do you and what you’re doing is received well. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to over deliver and over compensate thinking you need to do more just because you have a bigger title. Naturally elevate yourself into a new position, if you’re a manager or a director, learn the art of delegation and management, it’s a muscle that’s hardest to train at first because it feels like you’re giving up a part of you. But it’s ok. If you’re an associate like you are now, learn to listen, ask smart questions, be a sponge and know when to unleash that knowledge
