I just started managing people and I’m realising how tricky giving feedback can be. I really want to help people grow and trust me without making them defensive or anxious. For those with more experience managing others, what’s helped you give feedback that’s constructive, not discouraging?

You have to enable the corrective behavior, not just correct. Be human. Build trust.

I would have a meeting with each one first to find out how they like to get feedback. If they have something they want to work on, or have concerns.

You have to flex your style. Each of your employees will take feedback in different ways - sometimes misinterpreting what you meant. For example, you can have an extremely sensitive person who needs your messaging to be given in a gentle and kind way. And will need reassurance.
You have at least one who just doesn’t want feedback - those are the hardest to work with, and honestly if they don’t want feedback, they may not last long.
Think about your favorite mentor, and how they made you feel. At the end of the day this is what it comes down to

I will just add one point- my favorite mentor worked according to my traits. Similarly, you will have to uncover the traits of your team and then act accordingly
