I know we're not supposed to have favorites but...who is your favorite student of all time?

I had a kindergartener who was just the most incredible ray of sunshine. He would go out of his way to cheer other kids up, always had a positive attitude, and he was a really earnest learner. I wasn't able to stay in touch or hear where he is now but I always pray that this was not lost along the way.

My students who still communicate with me after they graduate are my favorites! 45 years of teaching!

There are two that have had the biggest impact on my heart. One was non-verbal autistic except he one time shouted “Hokey Pokey” because that was his favorite thing to do in music. The other was a boy that in kindergarten dressed as Buzz Lightyear and would randomly stand up, strike the pose and say “Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue.” That same child in 5th grade played “Amazing Grace” on the recorder so beautifully that I just started sobbing. So many have touched my heart but when I’m feeling down trodden, those two are the ones that always pop in my brain.

Two kids who were in ninth grade and couldn’t read a lick and were both discipline nightmares. One stuck with it and graduated. He still had some discipline issues, but was better. He wrote me a note just before he graduated that said, thank you because “without you I couldn’t write this note.” Big-time cry.

The other boy I worked with almost every day just teaching him sight words, sounds, etc. He had just been passed on year after year as lazy and a discipline problem. But even before the end of the year, his mom (who had some mental health issues) yanked him out of school. I often wonder what happened to him and hope he is doing okay.

The kids who were the most problematic are usually my favorites!

You believed in them.

The kid who wouldn’t let me teach him how to read unless I let him sweep the stairs every day with the big custodian broom. After that, it was smooth sailing. He taught me a valuable lesson in the value in discovering a student’s currency.

Honestly, kids love to sweep! It must be grounding?

The kids who behave like, well let’s say assholes when they’re in the classroom.

It’s hard to pick one-they’re all peanuts :D

A few children I do want to bump into some in particular when they’re adults: one boy for example would say “it’s ok, we make mistakes 🙂” and that has stayed with me. I try to favor moments like that and have a few more like that which have changed me a bit

After almost three decades in the classroom, I’ve had many “favorites” that I still keep in touch with. Each student I’ve had has taught me something, but like everyone else, there are just some that make you smile on the inside. Basically my favorites are kids unafraid to be themselves.
