I once received a job offer that included a bonus based on "company and individual performance." I told the HR person who was working with me that I understand that the bonus is subject to performance and therefore not necessarily the same from year to year but I would like a rough estimate so I could better evaluate the offer. She told me that she couldn't do that. Is it common to withhold this kind of information from candidates after giving an offer?

It's not uncommon at all. Base your decision on your salary. Make sure you are happy with the offer even if you never receive a bonus, that way any bonus is, indeed, a bonus.

Thanks for the advice. I agree with you. I’m definitely happy with the salary that they offered me. So, a bonus is a plus when I see that they offered it. I ended up not taking the job because of personal reasons.

A lot of companies do that. Even in my company, we get performance based raise and bonuses but they would give us a rough estimate that how much it would be. They can atleast give you a approx value and if they are not doing that, it feels a little strange.

Yeah, that’s actually pretty common. Many companies keep bonus details vague until after you’re onboard since it can vary year to year. It’s frustrating when you’re trying to evaluate an offer, though!

Yea, that’s my thing. It’s very frustrating when I am trying to figure out how much it might be before accepting the offer given to me. I guess I am learning something new this year.

Sounds like you shouldn't count on the bonus, or make it part of your decision.

Not common and a definite red flag 🚩. It would make me question a few things like, “is the company hitting bonus?” “Is this how communication is once hired?” “What are they hiding”. Any company should be able to give you pay comps for the area, and if they can’t and dance around that question, I would run.

How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.
