I once sat in on a hiring discussion where two candidates had nearly identical experience—but one was a woman with a non-traditional background, and the other fit the “typical finance mold.” Guess who got the offer? The hiring manager said, “We just hire the best person for the job,” but it felt more like they were picking the safest choice—someone who looked like everyone else in the room. I get that skills matter, but isn’t it a problem if the “best person” always fits the same profile? Have you seen this happen in hiring? Do you think it’s a fair policy, or just an easy excuse?
