I recently accepted an entry level job as a digital analyst and I just finished my masters degree. Can I leverage my masters degree for an early promotion (given that I perform well)? I also did not negotiate entry level salary… can I leverage my masters in data science to negotiate higher salary at promotion time? I know there’s a difference between mba vs other grad degrees so looking for clarity

Honestly masters degree doesn’t merit higher wages. You can leverage your skills from that degree and high performance but wouldn’t use the reasoning for a promotion based on your masters degree.

A degree is obviously important, however in my opinion it’s more important to master your role prior to requesting a promotion or raise in pay. Your degree won’t mean much if you can’t show you are efficient at the job. So my recommendation would be to focus on mastering your role then link it to how you can perform as good in the next position. Build a case as to why you want higher pay or a higher tier position and let the degrees back you. I’d promote experience and attitude over a big degree

👍🏼 With that in mind I believe experience, stories, case studies, and the degrees/certifications are all very important. Good luck none the less.

NW is notorious for underpaying people, and they don’t budge much at all on negotiating, just FYI. I’ve had 4+ friends work there. Good luck!

Finished school at NU. Not working there

I was in a similar position to you some 6months ago. From personal experience, across 3 different consulting firms, none cared for my masters.

Unless it was an MBA it doesn’t matter to them. A specialty masters that’s relevant will help you get the job but won’t help you leverage for more money. Still do your best to negotiate though!

I would personally not have gotten a masters if the plan was to be a consultant

I disagree with this. It’s worked out pretty well for me. I went to a non-target (unlike NU) for undergrad and grad, but it helped me get my foot in the door. Made manager by 27 and I’m not sure if I would have even gotten an interview without my masters.

I’m a mentor for a summer associate who I believe could be a great lawyer here (V100, small market if that matters). However, it is apparent he has no understanding of technology (redlines, word, excel). Based on his background, I believe it’s due to a lack of access. Would you ever recommend to your firm that he be given a course to catch up? Should I try and get him training on my own? Stay out of it? I dont want to overstep but believe this would help him as this puts him way behind his peers
