Do they normally ask that in interviews? i just feel like that would be an odd question to ask. If they do ask that I would just be honest.
While I haven't had that asked.. apparently it's common but that's so weird to me...
Although I would find that question rather odd. I can see the interviewer isn’t really testing your loyalty to your old employer; they’re checking how you make career decisions.
Keep it professional, short, and positive — you don’t need to over-explain.
Possible response:
While I truly valued my time with my previous employer, I felt this was a good opportunity to explore new organizations where I can grow and contribute in a fresh environment. I’m excited about the role here because it aligns with my skills and career goals. (Maybe be more specific with whatever the company you're interviewing for - mention their specific company values and tie some things in)
**Don't criticize your old company — even if you had reasons for not wanting to return. Keep the focus on what excites you about the new opportunity.
**Shift the conversation back to them — frame it around why their role and company are a better fit for you now.
**The best way to explain why you didn’t go back is to position it as an intentional choice for growth and new opportunities, not as a rejection of the old place.
Hope that helps!
Good luck to your interviews or future ones. 😊
Also don't ever say if you did or didn't contact your old employer, they don't need to know that
