I saw a tweet earlier today where a teacher said she's essentially a glorified AI validator rather than a teacher, since instead of actually evaluating the content of a student's writing, she's just determining whether AI wrote the essay or not, and that's very depressing and unfulfilling as it undermines what we considered the role of a teacher. With the rise of these AI tools, how do we ensure that students are developing the right communication and critical thinking skills?

The fact that kids are putting themselves in hospitals by following moronic TikTok trends is proof that the younger generation already has zero critical thinking skills.

funny

Yeah... No.

One suggestion I saw a while ago was to have students generate an AI essay and then critique it. Have students do work in class so you know they’re using their brains.

AI is a tool and it’s not going anywhere. Ultimately the quality of work will improve even if people get dumber. I would absolutely fail a design class in the year 1950 because I rely so heavily on a computer, but I’m extremely valuable today. We don’t need to force students to live the life of past generations.

I don't doubt that what she is saying it is true, and it is sad. Trying to get kids to write well was always difficult, and now they're buying into the hype that they don't have to. Not sure how you combat that. It reminds me of the recent NY Mag article about all the AI slop infesting the internet and coming up in search engines. Before long we'll just be drowning in the slop.

Teachers will need to adapt its teaching methods. Move away from old methods like essays, and actively using AI in the classroom setting will save time and allow them to focus more on personalized instruction and mentoring.

So English teachers should not require essays?
