I think part of why I find it so hard to negotiate a salary is I just have no confidence with it, I’ve never had to do it in the past so it’s quite intimidating. For people who have been doing it for a while, does it ever get easier?

Not exactly easier, you just stop caring as much about the awkwardness of it. Once you realize the company isn't going to rescind an offer because you asked for 10% more, the stakes feel lower. The worst they say is no and you're right back where you started.

That’s good you’ve never had an offer rescinded do asking for more, I think I worry about that when I think about it.

Yes it gets easier. At first I was afraid to ask for a big number too. Now I just anchor high expecting to negotiate lower. Becomes easier as you have more of these conversations imho

like

Yeah I guess if you really back yourself and are convincing you can definitely succeed with asking for more!

Negotiating your pay is one of those things that's just awkward, there's really no way around it. It does get easier, sure, but it always feels weird to me. What can help is to make some notes about things you've done well, reviewing that will boost your confidence. And make a good case for yourself, pointing out that you're a valuable worker and you keep getting more valuable.

I think notes can be a big help, I almost never bring writing with me and I think that’s a hindrance.

It gets easier

Lovely!

Repeating my phrasing has helped me a lot to become more confidence. With more practice it will get easier!

True I guess it becomes like clockwork after a while!

I got a job offer as a Safety Compliance Specialist with a focus on Operations/Process Safety. It’s a regional role, so I will manage over a few facilities in my given region. I negotiated my salary at 80k + $600 monthly car allowance + 8-10% annual bonus. I have 7 YOE in Operations & QA/QC in the Oil & Gas sector. I will complete bachelor degree in safety next year, so I was curious is this a reasonable offer to start my Safety career path? Also what are other certifications to better myself?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.

I received a job offer from company A and am currently negotiating salary. I have an interview with company B next week and know that they offer a higher base pay. There’s no guarantee that I will be offered a job at company B but my gut is telling me that company B would be a better fit for me. Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

Im currently going through industry change.
Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

My employers' CEO just announced that they just received $7 million from investors. He wants to use that money to offer incentives to employees that hussle and drive more revenue for the company. We're not sure what those incentives look like yet, but here are some post-announcement rumors from my co-workers:

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.
