In previous years, it would have been a lot harder. Right now, I wouldn't expect a gap to be penalized as heavily. There are millions of people out of work right now because of layoffs and an awful job market. Any interviewer or HM who's turned on the news at any point in the past 18 months knows this and shouldn't hold the gap against you.
Lean into the freelancing. They don't need to know how little it may have been. Fill up the gap as if freelancing was your full-time job.
I pretty much summed up my gap in employment as freelancing. As long as you can talk to the projects in the interview, it shouldn't be alarming, considering the way the market is.
