Common in toxic work places regardless of size, although I tend to stay away from smaller firms. The most toxic place I ever worked was a small firm.
Normally smaller firms lack good structure and boundaries. Leadership is weak or nonexistent. You end up wearing many hats because being a lawyer requires a different set of skills compared to running a business. Small firms with many more partners compared to associates is a huge red flag.
In terms of contextualizing the issue, saying it just “wasn’t a good fit” can have many different meanings. Say as little as possible while still remaining true. If you mean contextualizing the issue for yourself, know that other people’s dysfunction is not your fault.
issues after I absorbed paralegal/legal assistant work when support staff were fired and not replaced. That discussion was treated as insubordination, and I was terminated shortly before the holidays despite strong results.
Curious how others would read this:
• Leadership/structure failure vs performance issue?
• Common in small firms?
• How would you contextualize this when moving on?
I can completely relate to this. Same thing happened to me.
I’m sorry this happened to you. Keep your head up and move forward. Focus on crafting a clear, credible narrative to explain your departure in future interviews. You’ll never fully understand why a toxic environment is toxic—it just is.
I suggest focusing on the litigation skills you gained and motions/disputes you won. It sounds like you’re a terrific litigator.
A friend was in a similar position and she was able to quickly find another litigation role where she thrived. She moved in-house and has had a great career despite that initial toxic small law firm.

Familiar with almost the exact same scenario - associate with whom I worked was handling all of the owners/managing partners' case load and dismissed after 3 years, along with paralegal (me) and receptionist after expressing concerns about not being able to see amounts held in Trust account due to not having access to Clio where Trust accounting was held. Partner out most of the time and refunds would have to be issued to clients after Final Settlements already filed with court and attorneys fees being incorrect due to not being able to see amount in Trust.
