Congratulations on your new role! My advice is to be authentic, be available, and be helpful to your staff. Get to know them on a personal level, have an open-door policy, and be flexible. For your middle management role, do all of the above and set boundaries.
Great advice, thank you!
I have a recurring meeting with each of my reports once a month for 30 minutes. We each bring talking points, and I always let my report talk through their’s first. This gives me a sense of what they may be struggling with and adjust my own feedback/list if needed. They of course can come to me at anytime outside of this check in, but the recurring meeting reinforces the idea that I want to talk to them too, builds rapport, and has led to an increase in their casual outreach to me.
Thank you! That is insightful, sharing your experiences to guide the team.
Congrats ! I’m recently in middle management too at have 17 direct reports so this is actually probably going to be a very manageable training ground for you to build comfort and expertise. Walk in knowing you got the role because your the right person for the task. Assume the best about your team and figure out their special talents and gifts. You whole job is really just to empower them to do good work, so I recommend monthly check ins, and creating an environment of trust and safety. You’ll do great as long as you keep learning
Thank you! Do you have any tips on identifying the team’s special talents?
Take time to get to know your employees. Be authentic, but not too transparent. For example, it's ok to say, "that's a good question. I don't have the answer for you right now, but ill work to find the answer & give you an update as soon as I know. Too transparent, "I have no idea... they didn't really tell me what I'm supposed to be doing."
Once you have a foothold around what deliverables you need to provide to the business, create a plan. Identify your team's milestones & backtrack to what needs to happen to get there. Then, put names & dates to the tasks.
Once you have that, you can confidently give your direct reports the correct focus & exeptation of thier roles.
Have a regular touch point with your direct reports; weekly is a good start.
Hold people accountable, but do it with tact. Accountability is a must as a leader, set your expectations & repercussions for not meeting them, then stick to it.
There's a beautiful balance between authoritarian & encorager. Be true to yourself, seek to understand, really listen, and your network will organically grow because you'll earn trust. Trust is the bloodline of getting great things done!
Good luck on your new position!!!
