If one of your direct reports is not performing to expectations, would you say that it's a reflection of the manager, the employee, or a combination of both? The employee in this case is sincerely trying to improve.

It's situation dependent. The answer will vary based on any specific set of circumstances.

yes i guess this is true

If they’re genuinely trying, I’d say it’s a combo. It reflects on the manager to guide, set clear expectations, and adjust coaching style if needed. So it's worth looking into the situation to see if that's happening. But the employee still owns their growth. I’ve had reports struggle before and it pushed me to communicate better and be more hands-on, which helped us both.

thanks for the response!

Depends but combination of both. How long have they been there and how structurally defined was their onboarding plan ? Have you already identified where the gaps are?

like

i've identified their gaps and am trying to help them improve. I took this team on after a company reorg, and I don't believe the team was set up successfullly but some employees are still doing much better than others

Have you ever taken a job you know you will hate because you needed the money right away? I have a family to take care of. I don't want to be plowing through our savings for selfish reasons like my mindframe at work, but I don't want to make our lives worse by being miserable. It's a matter of really ruining some of our financial future if we don't get money soon.
