It’s brutal. I was hitting the pavement looking from January - May and got an offer end of May. I noticed a couple of things during my search. I’d also applied to dozens and dozens of roles which were completely aligned with my background.
The flood of applicants has allowed recruiters to fill roles with more people making lateral moves, rather than moving up.
I believe the speed at which you apply to roles makes a difference. The role I landed I applied to about two minutes after it was posted by the recruiter.
I also largely stopped applying to roles cold. I felt like it was only worth the effort in this market to apply to roles where I either had an existing relationship with the recruiter or someone could personally refer me or pass my resume along to a human.
External recruiters can also be helpful- make sure your LinkedIn profile sufficiently describes your experience so they can find you easily when they search for candidates.
Lastly, in the interviews that went well, where I went on to multiple rounds and where I got the offer, I pointed out all of the similar clients and projects I worked on that were extremely applicable to the account I’d be working on. In this market, teams have the luxury of being able to choose candidates that require a minimal learning curve and onboarding to the account and ways of working. Hope this helps.
The same on the creative side. I also work in NYC, and in my 14+ year career, I’ve never seen the market this bad.
What’s has your experience been like?
What do you see today that’s different from other times or years?
I see agencies and recruiters left without a plan to staff and constantly reacting. After years at monks experiencing their dysfunction, I initially thought that it was a them problem. It now feels to me like an everything, everywhere, all at once problem.
I feel the market was worse in 2008 but it’s still pretty awful now. But it’s also busy at this time especially with end of year sales, offers, and even new biz pitches so keep applying and quickly. Have everything ready to go. They also do scopes towards end of year and try to determine resources for Q1, so it’s not all about holiday winding down.
Yes I am having the same thing. I’m on the older side as well
By this industry standards, me too
Biz Dev/Acct lead working in NYC since 2000. This is the worst market I've ever seen. 2008 wasn't even this bad. Coupled with the fact that I'm in my late 40s has me at the end of my rope and with little hope.
I got 3 offers this summer, but not one of them was willing to pay a salary. I can't afford a purely commission role that only pays quarterly.
Thank you for sharing this. I truly felt that I was the only one going through this. I’m sorry you are going through this too. I really hope this turns for good in the short term.
