Learn the difference between a videographer Director of Photography and cinematographer to start. Basically you need to learn the craft of storytelling at a professional level and learn to deliver professional quality results. I’m curious what you define as modest living as well. You could actually make more shooting weddings and party’s if your goal is just that.
I define modest living as paying for a 1300 a month apartment rental. That’s all. I am currently a Director of photography and camera operator (pro bono) for a short film that is still in production. I’ve been studying cinematography and storytelling for as long as i’ve been a practicing videographer. That the last 6 years.
You might need to leave Charleston for a bigger market like Atlanta or Charlotte, if not, you’d likely need to at least partially focus on videos for events and small businesses.

What kind of work do you want to do in film/TV? If you’re doing still photography you can seek out your local news station for portraits and publicity photography of their anchors. That’s something we do a lot of here in NYC. Seek out local film productions to shoot publicity stills for the film. To shoot video for television gets a bit more complicated as you usually need to be a union member and able to operate a ped camera. What is your experience so far? What have you been shooting?
