I think any company that rescinds an offer just because you try to negotiate would be a terrible company to work for anyway. So you’re better off without them. Rescinding an offer for that reason just never made sense to me. It’s like, you got to the end of the recruitment and interview process with this candidate. If they ask for a number that’s not within your budget, you can just simply say no and leave the ball in their court to decide. Like why take the offer away all together. Just say, “no, this is the best we can do,” and let them decide.
They can always rescind the offer. That being said I have rarely seen that happen. I would definitely counter and try to negotiate. It doesn't hurt to ask and let them tell you no.
I have heard those stories, too, where companies immediately rescind after you try to negotiate. If you are coming back with reasonable numbers that you are making the case for, it shouldn’t come to that. As M1 said, you probably don’t want to work for a company like that anyway.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an offer rescinded for asking for more money, usually they just deny it and will give you a new offer, I get the worry but the job should be fine !
For your first full time offer it’s probably fair. Doesn’t hurt to ask but you may not get anything.
