As an attorney, unfortunately the office is never “closed”
No doubt they misrepresented this to you, but this is common at big firms
As in they expect you to be in the office or working? If the latter, that is normal.
This is normal in my experience. For every holiday, not just Christmas. Support staff are off and the office is “closed” but attorneys still work. Sort of like how the office is “closed” on the weekends but we work then too.
This
This is consistent with what I’ve experienced. The office “closes” in the sense that the office support staff isn’t in and you have to request HVAC, etc. if you plan to come in, and then all attorneys work remotely unless taking PTO.

I have never gone into the office at any law firm during the last 2 weeks in December. 2 midlaw firms and BigLaw. Just do what you want and check your email a couple of times a day.
I think they meant that the office is closed to clients because the firm has no support staff but attorney still work. Ugh. Sorry you were mislead. Can you use your vacation time?
Literally comments no one asked for. Happy to see you still have it in you though.
This seems like a bait and switch to me. The boutique litigation firms in my area who have this policy extend it to attorneys as well as support staff.
Never heard of this at a US law firm. I’ve been very jealous of my European/Asian/Australian colleagues who do though! Between Christmas and Chinese New Year some of them get off the better part of 6 weeks.
One of my friends was at a firm in Sydney that had notations by the sig blocks in their emails starting a few weeks before advising that they would be closed for the weeks of Xmas and New Year. I was acting as NY local counsel for her client from Hong Kong and so jealous every time I got an email!!
Then the deal died in early December but I didn’t get paid until February bc no one was on the office because of various national holidays in Australia and Hong Kong.
Lol yuck
