Love all the non-experts are just hopping into sustainability. It’s about to be a huge issue for many consulting firms. As someone with a degree and 6 years of experience in sustainability, this stuff is much more complicated and broad than a grad certificate education will provide.
I will tell you that sustainability projects take pretty deep subject matter expertise to get right same as tax/assurance/etc. Maybe start by hiring a team of sustainability experts and let them tell you.
Sorry to sound mean but this post is just so flippant. It’s like saying “I took a class on programming and now I’m setting up our digital practice. What is going on in computers?”
Thanks SA1, I appreciate your candor. And exactly what I'm trying to avoid - How can I structure the right inputs, teams and support in order to set us up for actionable change? Already gathering a board of advisors and certified experts - as I think I'm just the "cheap" option for tip of spear to get this going and prove our need.
We already hire in sustainability consultants for our ESG reporting, but I was hoping to get a broader view of service firms specifically, and any trends or gaps/blind spots that may be related to that.
Start looking into TCFD and climate-financial disclosure consulting. It’s going to pop off in the next few years. KPMG already does this type of work and while not mandatory now, the SEC is about to go through notice and comment about mandating certain disclosures (like scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions) by next year. A lot of companies will be scrambling for help with this.
TCFD - giving the patina of legitimacy to the ESG fraud.
‘grow our ESG / CSR practice” is a very wide net. One could practically have separate practices or dedicated teams for E, S, and G. And indeed have a dedicated digital practice enabling E, S, and G collectively or individually.
You’ll meed to focus your strengths, industries, short term service wins, long term offerings etc.
Happy to share my experience in both, setting up and growing ESG and digital practices. Feel free to DM.
BA1 is spot on with TCFD, could also be beneficial to have an understanding of how to complete and assist with a CDP report
If you already have service lines in product innovation and engineering I would think it would be a relevant extension to begin with end of life waste recovery and circular economy principals. CPG and apparel space especially needs some fresh ideas for growing recommerce opportunities.
+ Also, I know this is a BROAD ask, but starting from "square one" and want to make sure I highlight pillars and areas of interest early, and don't start with any blind spots.
Planning on taking LT through a materiality / prioritization session, areas of biz/finance interest in our vision plans and go from there, but if anyone else has thoughts, please chime in!
Not sure what makes you assume everyone is a non-expert here?
