I’m in my early 30s, and lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to balance my career ambitions with my desire to start a family someday. I’m really focused on climbing the ladder right now, but I can’t shake the worry that taking time off for maternity leave or shifting priorities could slow down my progress—especially in an industry as fast-paced as finance. I see colleagues who seem to manage it all, but I wonder what the reality looks like behind the scenes. For those who’ve been through this, how did you make it work without feeling like you had to sacrifice one for the other?

I’ve done it, in financial services (trading desk) and in fast paced careers. It’s totally possible! If you have a good reputation, good work ethic, top colleges or degrees - your career will go to new heights and you will earn more $$$ than you ever thought possible.
You need a supportive partner, and you need to spend on quality childcare. I had both kids in daycare AND I had a nanny. For a while, my childcare bills were more than my mortgage! It was totally worth it for my peace of mind and for my kids. Kids grow up quickly and they don’t need mom hanging around them all the time. You keep your financial independence, contribute to your family, save for your kiddos future. My kids have more money to their name than most adults. As your career grows, you can command flexibility. I’m a very present mom. Your double income will let you and spouse retire early and enjoy.

So I think it is possible to do both but if I’m completely honest, it may feel like it’s at the detriment of one or the other. After my first, I went back to work full time and worked hard but ended up with intense mom guilt at how little time I was getting with him. I’ve just had no 2 and have made an active decision to slow it down this time in order to spend more time with both of them while they’re still so young. Saying that, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer and everyone will find the balance that’s right for them. I have zero regrets, just different priorities now and it’s for a relatively short time. But I know that can be hard to imagine before you have kids, I certainly see it very differently now.

Hello fishes. I'm an MBA graduate currently working as a digital marketing professional in a mid size consulting firm with 3 years of experience.
I am terribly underpaid in my current org at 5.5 LPA after a recent promotion and annual appraisal. Another mid size consulting firm offered me 7.5 LPA but I am asking them around 9 LPA.
Am I asking too much or shall I take the offer of 7.5 LPA?

Thank you
