I’m new at a firm and there are a few senior associates who I email/text questions to but never go out of my way to say hi. For example, I will walk by their half way open office door and not peek my head in to make small talk. I of course say hi if I pass them in the hallway. Am I being aloof by doing this?

Nope. Make small talk in the break room or kitchen. Stop to chat when you know something more personal about them or when you want to say thank you for a kindness.
