I'm pretty frustrated. I keep getting turned down for jobs because they say I'm "overqualified," but I need a job! If this has happened to you, how do you edit your resume to avoid that problem, while still being honest about your background?

Be careful that that's really the situation. Jobs are very hard to get right now and employers will say whatever when they reject you. "overqualified" could easily become "underqualified". In my opinion, keep selling your experience.

I tailor every resume for each position. If the position calls for only a little bit of my experience, that is what I’ll outline on the resume. Making sure I qualify, but don’t run that risk of looking overqualified.

Have you gotten to any interviews or is this just based on experience? The risk with overqualified candidates is that if there is not a promotion available in the near future, after the company trains you, you will leave. Try assuring the companies you interview with that you are looking for long term opportunity and are ok with slower promotions (if you are).

When I’ve seen candidates deal with this, one thing that helps is tailoring the resume to focus on the skills and experience most relevant to the role you want, rather than listing everything. It’s about showing how you fit the specific job, not your entire career history. Maybe streamline or summarize older or less relevant roles, so it doesn’t come across as “too much” for the position.

Just discovered a public slack channel (that very much should have been private) that a few women at my work have been using to bitch about the co-workers they don’t like. There’s a lot of very mean posts about several of the CDs, account people, producers etc. There’s quite a few hateful posts about me and my partner too 🙈 should I tell them?

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?
