At your level (senior accountant), it’s usually easy to replace people. That means you have less negotiating power. The flip side is that there are more jobs out there for your level and some of them may pay more than you currently make. If you have a higher offer in hand, that can also help with negotiations by proving your market worth. That said, it’s better to focus on growth and development early in your career, because what you know is what makes you valuable in the market; the pay will (eventually) follow. If you’re learning and being given opportunities to grow in your current role, don’t be too eager to jump somewhere else just for a raise. Over time, people who habitually jump around end up learning less and their careers often stagnate.
