In a new position in BigLaw….hitting my hours each month with about a 5 hour cushion. 23 year lawyer, but was in-house 20 if those years. Confident in my work product, but concerned that meeting the minimum billable requirement somehow isn’t in reality enough. Thoughts? I’m at a point where I want to do my hours, have a good product and enjoy my weekends.

Depends on your firm and group. In my group, you’d be perfectly fine with the billable target. Other firms and groups have a higher threshold that you should be able to find out by talking with other associates in your group.

like

If you’re hitting your target, you should be fine, and if you’re not fine, you want a different firm anyway. Also, if your work product is good and you’re hitting minimums, you’re making them a lot of money, and they’re not in the business of throwing away a revenue source.

like

If you’re hitting your targets each month, I can’t imagine you’ll run into an issue. What is the culture like at your firm? Is everybody else competing to see who can bill the most hours each month or they like you? Hitting their hours and enjoying their life?

like

Once you're hitting the target, there are metrics (e.g., collections) that start to matter more than just rote number of billed hours. Billing 2,100 hours where 100 of them get written off because the associate was churning or taking longer than warranted is worse than billing 2,000 hours where you were efficient and produced high quality work product that required very little revision by the partner. Also, level of overall "busyness" in the group makes a difference. As long as you're pulling your weight in terms of being willing to take on work, help out where asked, etc. the fact that other associates may have more hours technically billed should not impact how others perceive you as a valued team member.

like

It’s a very odd environment. I’m a partner. I have no idea what the associates or others on the team are billing. I do know that some don’t make the minimum hours. I also know I’m likely under billing as I worry about clients cutting bills. I’ve been here 5 months and, knock on wood, haven’t had any bills cut yet as far as I am aware.

I am a contract employee that was just brought on a month ago. I have done well with onboarding and learning their tech. I have now been asked to design an architecture for an upcoming project, and document it all. Nothing at this company has been well documented before. I have a feeling they just planning to use my previous experience and then let me go since my pay is high. Is there a way I can safeguard against this?

Just landed a full time gig, looking to get some furniture so I’m not working on my parents’ kitchen table during this remote period. Any recommendations for desks and chairs? I’m hoping to find something that’s easy to assemble and break down for when I need to move, and something that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

I know everyone has a different kind of setup that works for them. I currently have a laptop, drawing pad, second monitor, and a desk riser.

What monitors would you recommend for home office? I am about to buy one myself. I work in FDD. Do you guys recommend the ultra wide? Curve screen? freesync? And what definition is good enough ? I really do love Apple Retina display but the price.

Hello RSM coworkers! I am thrilled to be moving to RSM into a Scheduler roll. I just found out yesterday and want to be as prepared as possible in the next steps.

So here are my questions.

How long does the background study take? I'm guessing admin staff have a study that is faster and less complicated than someone in Tax ect.

When training at home what did you need that wasn't supplied by RSM? My home office is well stocked but I want to be as prepared as possible.

Thanks in advance!

I want to get out of ID so badly. I don’t mind the work but the hours are just killing me. I just started at a new firm less than 6 months ago and I am already desperate to get out. How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.
